How to Install Side Steps on your Range Rover Sport (2006-2012)

Offering a range of benefits, Side steps are a must-have accessory for any large vehicle such as the Range Rover Sport. However, most vehicles do not have factory installed side steps, meaning you will have to get them mounted to yourself. This leaves you with two options; either get them installed by a professional and pay hundreds of pounds, or do it yourself for free by following our step-by-step guide on how to install side steps. Since different vehicles have different processes for attaching accessories, this guide is catered towards the Range Rover Sport 2006-2012 model.

Before getting started, ensure that you have all the necessary tools with you. For installing side steps on your range rover sport, you will need the following items.

• Safety glasses and gloves
• Padded mat or creeper
• Box end wrenches
• Ratchet and Socket Set
• 2 head star screwdrivers
• Cutting tool

Step 1: Remove the Plastic Trim on the Side

First, you have to take off the plastic along the sill of the car. Take a P zed 2 head star screwdriver, and start taking out all the bolts along the sides of your range rover. 

Once you take off the outer plastic along the sill, there will be another layer of bolts underneath a plastic strip. 

Carefully bend the plastic strip to take out the bolts, but don’t apply too much pressure as it may damage the plastic. After removing all the bolts, carefully pull out the black plastic.

Step 2: Attach the Bolt Plates and Brackets

Remove the rubber plugs from the factory-drilled holes and attach the bolt plate into the holes.

Attach the brackets to the bolt plate. To know which bracket goes to which side, read the inscription on each one carefully.

The brackets need to be fitted in a certain order, the bracket with one hole at the top is the front bracket, the bracket with two holes on the top plate is the middle bracket and the bracket with 3 holes on the top plate is the rear bracket. 

Step 3: Reattach the Plastic

The side steps kit for the Range Rover Sport 2006-2012 comes with pre-cut plastic sills so you don’t need the old sills. Once the brackets have been fitted correctly you can fit the new plastic sills to the car.

Step 4: Mount the Side Steps to the Brackets

The last step involves attaching the side steps to the brackets. This is a fairly simple step as the only thing that needs to be considered is the alignment with the brackets. 

The pattern side should face the top, and the thinner side of the side steps should be on the front side.

Fully tighten all the bolts and nuts to ensure the side steps don’t loosen up. Once this is done, you have your brand-new side steps successfully mounted to your Range Rover Sport.
